Poor Dog Group was a contemporary theater collective based in Los Angeles, California.

2008 - 2018

Poor Dog Group [PDG] met while studying at the California Institute of the Arts. The Group began making performances in an industrial warehouse, which was located in downtown Los Angeles. Their work was presented at The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT), The Contemporary Art Museum Santa Barbara, The Getty Villa Theater Lab Series, The Curtis R. Preim Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), RADAR LA, South Coast Repertory Theater, LAX Festival, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Bootleg Theater, and the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA. Additionally, the company worked in a variety of contexts and spaces including warehouses, office buildings, parking lots, museums, and galleries.

Poor Dog Group [PDG] met while studying at the California Institute of the Arts and started working together under the name Poor Dog Group from 2008 - 2018. The Group began making performances in a rented warehouse, which was located in downtown Los Angeles. Their work was presented at The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT), The Contemporary Art Museum Santa Barbara, The Getty Villa Theater Lab Series, The Curtis R. Preim Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), RADAR LA, South Coast Repertory Theater, LAX Festival, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Bootleg Theater, and the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA. Additionally, our company works in a variety of contexts and spaces including warehouses, office buildings, parking lots, museums, theaters, and festivals.

Partnering with the CalArts Center for New Performance, PDG was presented at the inaugural Radar L.A. Festival, co-produced by The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival, Centre Theater Group, and REDCAT. Abroad, we have toured throughout Eastern Europe performing in over a dozen cities in Croatia, Poland, and Serbia. This tour included a residency at The University of Zagreb and artist participation at the 2009 Grotowski Festival. More recently, we toured to The Netherlands to participate at the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. They received development residencies’ at Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, Lower Manhattan Cultural Counsel, Headlands Center for the Arts, and The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA.

PDG’s has been written about in the American Theater Magazine, Theater Magazine, and Beautiful Savage Magazine. We have received multiple critical accolades in Los Angeles and received LA Weekly Awards for Best Production Design, Best Original Music, and Best Lighting Design. PDG won Best Performance at The Skradin International Theater Festival in Croatia.

Poor Dog Group has received major funding from Theater Communications Group, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Grotowski Institute, The United States Embassy in Serbia, The National Endowment for the Arts / American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, EMPAC, The Getty Museum, CalArts, REDCAT, The Los Angeles Department of Culture, Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Center for Cultural Innovation, The Dutch Cultural Consulate, and Creative Capital Performing Arts Award. Poor Dog Group was a non-for-profit 501c3 organization.
